Sustainability is an integral part of Marimekko’s business and decision-making. It shapes how we design products, work with people and address climate and nature across our value chain.
Our sustainability work is guided by a clear strategy and targets, and by long-term progress built step by step. During 2026–2030, we will continue this work by advancing priorities related to products, people and the planet. Our focus areas include timeless and long-lasting design, circularity, supply chain transparency, and the management of our social and environmental impacts.
Marimekko’s design philosophy and and operations have always been based on a sustainable approach: we want to provide our customers with timeless, functional and high-quality products that, during their lifetime, bring joy to many different users.
We believe that determined sustainability work supports Marimekko’s long-term success. That is why sustainability is one of the five strategic success factors in our business strategy. Marimekko aims to be a forerunner in developing products and practices across the value chain – for example by extending the life cycle of products in different ways and by increasing the use of organic and recycled materials.

Our approach to sustainability
During 2026–2030, Marimekko’s sustainability work is guided by our CARE principles. CARE reflects our commitment to products, people and the planet, and describes the way we work across all focus areas of sustainability. At Marimekko, CARE is more than a word. It brings together our values, our long design heritage and the everyday choices that shape our sustainability work. The CARE principles guide decision-making across our three focus areas: product, people and planet.
How the CARE principles guide our sustainability work
C – Circular in ambition
We are advancing towards a circular economy by designing timeless, high‑quality products made to stand the test of time and use. Our aim is to use resources wisely and extend product lifecycles across the entire value chain.
A – Authentic at heart
We act with authenticity and openness, staying true to our values. Transparency, honest communication and continuous improvement are integral to our sustainability work.
R – Relevant across generations
Our design is meaningful across generations. We create timeless products and solutions that endure over time, both aesthetically and from a sustainability perspective.
E – Ethical in actions
Ethics guide our actions throughout the value chain. This is reflected in our respect for human rights and in responsible business practices and decisions that take into account people, communities and the environment.
Sustainability governance and strategic foundation
We believe that determined sustainability work supports the company’s long-term success. That is why sustainability is one of the five strategic success factors in Marimekko’s business strategy for 2023–2027.
The focus areas and actions of our sustainability strategy are based on a double materiality analysis. They also reflect Marimekko’s brand, vision and values, the key megatrends shaping the fashion and textile industry, and an assessment of industry best practices.
Responsibilities and implementation
Sustainability is part of the daily work of every team and business unit at Marimekko. Each team is responsible for sustainability actions in its own area and for identifying and managing related risks.
Business Development & Transformation and its Sustainability team are responsible for developing and coordinating the sustainability strategy across the company and the value chain. The team supports the organization in sustainability work and monitors progress against targets. Other key functions – Design, Innovation & Creative Concepts; Product and Supply Chain; as well as Quality and Innovation Works – are responsible for implementing sustainability work in their respective areas in line with the strategy.
Marimekko’s Board of Directors is responsible for the highest level of sustainability oversight. The Board approves the company’s sustainability strategy, Code of Conduct and Sustainability Policy, as well as the ethics & compliance program. The Board monitors the progress of the sustainability strategy and the results of the sustainability work on a regular basis.
Members of the Management Group are responsible for sustainability actions in their own units as well as for identifying and managing sustainability-related risks. Sustainability-related targets and metrics are included in the annual targets of the President and CEO and the members of the Management Group, and progress is monitored regularly. The targets are cascaded throughout the organization.
Risk management
Risks related to the environment, social matters, human rights, and the prevention of bribery and corruption are addressed as part of Marimekko Group’s risk management. Key risks and related mitigation measures are reported in the company’s Report of the Board of Directors, interim reports and other reporting required by law and good governance.
